Vintage 1965 Holton Double French Horn w/ Case for sale in Sioux City, IA
For your consideration is a 1965 Holton double french horn with the original Holton branded F Horn case included. We believe the model to be either the H178 or H179, but due to the bell logo being obscured, we were unable to definitively say. This horn (SN: 387914) dates to 1965 and in reviews, the Holton H178 and 179's are described as being ideal choices for their well rounded sound and response to high register notes. This particular horn shows a few areas of wear, but is playable and priced accordingly.We noticed during our inspection that the instrument's logo has been obscured and buffed out during the re-lacquer process making identifying it quite difficult (see photo). Luckily, using the Holton Loyalist site, along with other information provided online helped us narrow down the age for this horn and roughly presume the model to be either a Holton H178 or H179 based on serial number digit systems, the rotary cap design, and the rough outline of the logo matching the design of the Holton design of its time.The horn has areas of denting, scratching, beginning stages of red rot on the lead pipe, and other cosmetic issues (see photos). However, the horn plays, it seals properly, all slides move, pop, and are comfortable. This would make for a good budget option for someone looking for a vintage horn provided they are willing to service and care for the aforementioned service and age comments above. Case included has areas of tolex rips, scratching, and other wear but latches operate as intended and case is protective to the horn.Listing is for the horn and case as shown.
