Health Technician (Optometry)

Duties include but are not limited to:
Interviews, works up patients and performs case histories Identifies problems, measures and records visual acuities both near and far; neutralizes patient spectacles with both manual and automatic lensometers:
measures and records intraocular pressures, vital signs, keratometry readings, pupil examinations, confrontational visual fields, extra ocular motility/muscles), color vision, amsler grid, stereo and BAT (brightness acuity test) testing. Assists in low vision and compensation and pension examinations. Performs pre-operative and post-operative teaching with patients and families. Assists with informed consents. Sets up, monitors, performs, and trouble shoots automated visual fields (Humphrey and Matrix), corneal topographer, auto-retractor, keratometer, HRT, OCT, fundus photographs, A-scan, B-scan, Tonopen, pachymeter and lensometers (manual and automatic). Receives patients, explains all steps of the examination, procedures, and photography, and answers all questions related to the visit to the best of his/her ability. Administer eye medications under physician or optometrist's direction. Use of topical pharmacological agents for dilation, anesthesia, glaucoma or miosis, requires an understanding of the medication's complications, adverse reactions and side effects. Safely operates the digital retinal camera to take high quality digital photographs and correctly stores and forwards the images to an optometrist or eye care practitioner. Performs basic set-up and troubleshooting of the digital photography equipment. Performs optician duties in support of optometry clinic. Assists patients in selecting eyeglasses. Takes measurements, fits, and completes order forms for optical lenses and frames. Adjusts and repairs eyewear. Communicates with prosthetic personnel and/or laboratory regarding the ordering and/or repair of eyeglasses. Handles the re ordering of eyeglasses due to loss or breakage. Maintains examination rooms, including disinfection of equipment, maintaining and ordering an inventory of supplies, and tracking medication expirations. Trouble shoots problems with optical equipment and performs routine repair and maintenance or arranges for repairs that are complex. Participates in developing guidelines and protocols, new patient programs along with evaluation of existing programs. Maintains patient records and other data required by the clinic, service, and medical center. Reviews ophthalmology and optometry consults and schedules the consults in a timely fashion. Facilitates patient movement into and through the clinic, minimizing delays and duplication of work, pulls pertinent clinical documents and images for the following day's clinic and files and/or submits clinical documents and images for scanning. Good hearing and visual acuity are required. The work involves standing long hours, walking, bending and reaching on a routine basis. Due to the unpredictability of patient needs, the incumbent may be asked to stay late if a provider determines it necessary. Many of the tests are performed in reduced lighting, which requires good central and peripheral vision and coordination to prevent injury to self or to the patient Promotion Potential:

Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to:
performing ocular imaging, perimetry, and initial evaluations. Understands the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the eye. Skilled in operating various instruments and equipment along with understanding the medical data generated by patient/equipment connections. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-5 level. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-4. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
